Community Art
Volunteer
In my second year as a "chalk walk" artist at the Raven Landing Senior Community, I decided to celebrate our Alaska State Flower, the Alpine Forget-Me-Not (Myosotis alpestris) and the wonderful fuzzy bumble bees that inhabit my home garden. (Aug. 2019)
As a "chalk walk" artist at our Raven Landing Senior Community, what could my subject possibly be but a raven! Kris Capps, a writer with the local newspaper, The Fairbanks Daily News Miner, wrote a very nice article including photos of some of the art pieces. It was a fun day talking with the residents. Folding chairs were set up near each of the artists so residents could watch the works in progress and chat a while. I was pleasantly surprised to meet a retired art teacher from my district, now a resident at Raven Landing. (Aug. 2018)
Professional Collaboration
Spring 2021 - University of Alaska Museum of the North
I partnered with museum educators and artist, Ree Nancarrow, to develop an art unit and art kit based on the artist's work. Ree is an Alaskan quilt artist whose work speaks to our changing environment. Her quilt projects include fabrics that she designs for specific quilts. As such, this unit starts with lessons for designing painted paper using a variety of techniques. Students then use their painted papers to create a paper quilt square that can be based on abstract shapes or realistic imagery.
